Is Your Firm Invisible to AI? Here's How to Find Out in 60 Minutes
Your future clients aren't just Googling anymore. They're opening ChatGPT, typing "best employment lawyer in Austin" or "top CPA for small businesses in Denver" — and acting on whatever AI tells them.
The problem? Most professional service firms have no idea what AI says about them. And the stakes are higher than most realize.
The numbers are stark
According to SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, ChatGPT recommends only 1.2% of local businesses it's asked about. Research shows 84% of decision-makers act on AI's first suggestion — and once AI picks a winner, it tends to keep picking the same one. Meanwhile, Capgemini's 2025 research found that 58% of consumers have already replaced traditional search with AI tools for discovering services.
There is no page two in AI search. You're either in the answer or you don't exist.
The good news: you can test this yourself, free, right now
Testing your AI visibility requires no technical skills and no budget. Here's the 60-minute version:
Open a private/incognito browser window for each platform — this prevents your browsing history from skewing results. Then run these five tests:
ChatGPT (chatgpt.com) — Ask: "Who are the best [your practice area] firms in [your city]?" Note whether your firm appears, where it ranks, and which competitors show up instead. ChatGPT searches Bing for current data, so firms with a strong Bing presence tend to perform better here.
Google Gemini (gemini.google.com) — Ask the same question. Gemini pulls heavily from Google Business Profile data, so you may be visible here but invisible on ChatGPT — or vice versa. Document both.
Perplexity (perplexity.ai) — No account needed. Perplexity's advantage is that it shows numbered source citations. Check not just whether you're mentioned, but whether your website is cited. Competitor websites that appear as sources are your immediate benchmark targets.
Claude (claude.ai) — Claude is more conservative than other platforms and mentions fewer businesses, but with higher confidence. Appearing here is a strong signal.
Microsoft Copilot (copilot.microsoft.com) — Powered by Bing, making Bing Places optimization directly relevant. If you've ignored Bing because "everyone uses Google," you may be invisible to Copilot's entire user base.
One important caveat: run each prompt 3–5 times across different days. LLMs are probabilistic by design — Thinking Machines Lab found that 1,000 identical runs of the same prompt produced 80 unique outputs. A single test is not a finding. A pattern across multiple tests is.
What actually determines whether AI recommends you
Researchers at Princeton, IIT Delhi, Georgia Tech, and the Allen Institute studied what content characteristics most improve AI visibility. The findings are specific:
- Including statistics boosts visibility by up to 33.9%
- Adding expert quotes improves it by 32%
- Citing authoritative sources within your content adds 30.3%
BrightLocal's 2025 research found that business websites were the most frequently cited source across every LLM — ChatGPT used business websites 58% of the time. But content freshness matters: pages updated within the last three months are 3× more likely to be cited than stale ones.
Beyond your website, directory listings are the second most powerful lever. Yelp appears as a source in one-third of all AI searches. Foursquare powers 60–70% of ChatGPT's local results through a direct data partnership. For law firms specifically, Avvo, FindLaw, Martindale-Hubbell, and Super Lawyers are heavily cited. For accounting firms, the AICPA Directory and QuickBooks ProAdvisor Database matter most.
And perhaps most importantly: brand mentions across the web function like votes of confidence, even without clickable links. According to the OMNIUS GEO Industry Report, brands in the top 25% for web mentions receive 10× more AI visibility than those in the bottom quartile.
A simple tracking system to measure progress
Don't just test once. Track your results in a spreadsheet with four tabs:
- Prompt Library — your standardized test questions by category
- Results Log — one row per prompt/platform combination, recording whether you were mentioned, your position, sentiment, and which competitors appeared
- Summary Dashboard — your mention rate per platform (e.g., mentioned in 3 of 5 ChatGPT prompts = 60% mention rate)
- Baseline vs. Current — monthly comparison to spot movement
Plan for 60–90 days before expecting measurable shifts from any optimization effort. Changes to directory listings and web content can appear in Perplexity and ChatGPT within days to weeks, since they search the web in real time. Changes that require model retraining take longer.
The window is still open — but narrowing
The firms building AI visibility right now are establishing compounding advantages that will be very difficult to dislodge. LLMs tend to reinforce the sources they've already identified as authoritative, creating winner-takes-most dynamics in local professional services markets.
The first step costs nothing: open ChatGPT today and ask it to recommend a firm like yours in your city. Whatever it says is already shaping real buying decisions.
